Contrast of hue

Contrast of hue is shown by undiluted colors in their most intense hues. The greater the distance of the colors are in the color wheel, the greater the contrast of hue. The most extreme combination is yellow/red/blue.

In the example, the left panel has the greater contrast of hue since blue is further away from red than orange.

Example:

Light-dark contrast

The juxtaposition of light and dark values. When a color is next to a darker color, it appears lighter. When a color is next to a lighter color, it appears darker.

Example:

Cold-warm contrast

Neighbouring colors can affect whether a tone appears as warm or cold.

In the example, the left blue-green, surrounded by a warm red, appears more cold. The right panel's red, surrounded by a cold blue-green, appears more warm.

Example:

Complementary contrast

Complementary colors create discord in an artwork, as they are the most extreme contrast that fight for the eye’s attention with equal force. They frequently create a vibrational effect.

Example:

Simultaneous contrast

Simultaneous contrast occurs when a viewer compensates for a color by perceiving its complementary color. The example's central greys appear tinted by the complementary color of its surrounding color.

Example:

Contrast of saturation

Contrast of saturation can give a color a dull or vivid effect depending on the colors around it. When comparing two or more colors, a color that is placed next to a duller color will appear more vibrant, and a color placed next to a more saturated color will appear duller.

Example:

Contrast of extension

Contrast of extension involves quantifying the proportions of color patches and comparing their relative areas to determine whether they are in balance.
